Renuvion in Washington DC and the DMV area

Loss of tissue elasticity and tone is a hallmark of aging skin, it's the characteristic change that makes one start to look older than one feels inside. Until recently, no surgical procedure or energy source achieved consistent significant tightening without an extensive recovery. Renuvion represents a paradigm shift in the way that we can resurface skin from above and tighten skin from below the skin’s surface. This next-generation technology uses Cold Atmosphere Plasma (CAP) to achieve a previously unobtainable level of tissue tightening and improvement. West End Plastic Surgery offers Renuvion for skin tightening. Whether liposuction is used in conjunction or not, there isn't an area of the body that Renuvion cannot treat.

Is Renuvion Safe?

Specifically, in the last twelve months, Apyx Medical (the manufacturer of Renuvion) has received four FDA 510(k) clearances for the use of their Renuvion handpieces in specific clinical indications, all of which are supported by substantial evidence demonstrating the safety of their products.

Renuvion is FDA-cleared for the use in improving the appearance of lax skin in the neck and submental region! With this clearance, Renuvion is the only product that is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of loose skin on the neck and chin. Loss of jawline definition with age is inevitable and can add years to one’s appearance. Renuvion provides a minimally-invasive treatment with minimal downtime. The results reveal a more contoured and smoother neck and jawline. Dr. Paul Ruff was the primary investor in this study which lead to the FDA approval. You can read more about it here.

Renuvion also has FDA 510(k) clearance for treating soft tissues after liposuction treatment. The Renuvion APR handpiece is the only device to have a 510(k) clearance for use following liposuction. This FDA clearance further demonstrates the safety and effectiveness of Renuvion technology. Already cleared by the FDA for the treatment of neck laxity, facial renewal procedures, and the contraction of soft tissue, Renuvion's latest 510(k) clearance allows physicians to set a new standard for liposuction results when it comes to minimally invasive body contouring.

What Our Patients Say

"Less than three months ago, I had a procedure with Dr. Ruff and have been totally amazed by the results. Not only was my recovery an absolute breeze, Dr. Ruff’s bedside manner and professionalism were truly unparalleled. Never once did I feel rushed or disregarded when asking questions that I am sure Dr. Ruff has heard many, many times. What Areas Can Be Treated With Renuvion?

From the jawline and jowls to the calves, Renuvion can tone any area of skin laxity with discreetly placed scars about five millimeters in length. Traditional procedures leave unsightly arm, abdomen, and thigh scars and result in prolonged recovery and severely limited activity. With Renuvion, you can expect progressive tightening and a rapid return to normal life.

Any area on the body can use Renuvion for skin tightening. The most popular areas for treatment include:

  • Abdomen
  • Breasts
  • Back
  • Arm
  • Thighs
  • Neck

Renuvion with Liposuction

Renuvion is the only device FDA-cleared to be used after liposuction. Liposuction effectively removes fat volume, leaving behind empty space which may increase the appearance of excess or loose skin. Renuvion goes beneath the surface and applies precise energy directly to the source of the loose skin. This energy contracts the collagen fibers and pulls the skin down, closer to the muscle, for a more contoured appearance.  By adding Renuvion to these procedures, physicians have another tool to help them obtain optimal liposuction results.

Using Renuvion after liposuction allows patients, with minimal to moderate skin redundancy, to attain high-definition results that were once only available with skin excision. Renuvion and liposuction are the gold standard for amazing body contouring results.

Renuvion in the head and neck region can also be used for skin resurfacing. It has the power to erase years of sun damage and/or treatment below the skin surface along the lower face, jawline, and neck to restore the contours of younger days. The facial handpiece can tighten the upper and lower eyelids, jowls, nasolabial folds, and lip lines.

Renuvion Candidates

Renuvion is an excellent modality for patients with mild to moderate skin excess who do not want scars, incisions, or extended downtime. For the subcutaneous plasma treatment, any skin type is a good candidate. For the facial resurfacing hand-piece, only those with lighter skin types are candidates.

How Does Renuvion Work?

Plasma energy is the fourth state of matter. It is the most abundant form of visible energy in the universe. Common examples of plasma in nature are lighting and the Aurora Borealis. When gas is exposed to an electrical charge, it creates plasma energy. This technology has been harnessed and used in medicine for decades in various forms. Any general surgery resident is awed at the effectiveness of the argon beam coagulator when they first see it in action.

Helium plasma is unique in its requirement for only a small radio frequency charge to activate helium gas resulting in an abundant release of ionic energy. The active plasma beam is hugged by a cloud of cold helium gas, keeping the temperature between 100 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

The action of the plasma does not appear to rely solely on heat to create change like all other energy-based devices. A combination of some heat with ionic and reactive particles from the plasma cloud induce a change in the dermis and underlying architecture. The result is toned skin with a less crepey appearance. These characteristics provide our patients an aesthetic rejuvenation procedure with extraordinary precision, a high safety profile, and previously unobtainable results.

Does The Procedure Require General Anesthesia?

Renuvion can be done under general anesthesia, sedation or even local anesthesia only for limited areas. Pro-Nox nitrous oxide delivery can also be used as an inhaled anesthetic; similar to laughing gas at your dentist's office. Pro-Nox is often combined with oral pain medications to avoid having to go to sleep.

How Many Renuvion Treatments Will I Need?

Renuvion is a single treatment. You will start seeing results soon after surgery, but the skin continues to tighten over the next several months and up to a year as the skin remodels and deposits new collagen.

Recovery After Renuvion Skin Resurfacing

Although most patients are up and about at 2 weeks, there is still redness/erythema that lasts approximately 4 weeks. The energy penetrates deep into the skin for maximal results which does lengthen downtime. This is in contrast to Renuvion tightening where we have had patients go back to work within a few days. For limited areas, most patients only require Motrin or Tylenol during recovery. For more extensive areas, we do prescribe narcotic pain medication. However in our experience, patients usually only take the medication for the first couple of days.
