Dysport® is an injection used to improve and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines on the face, particularly frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).
It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for causing wrinkles, resulting in a smoother and more youthful appearance. Dysport is an injectable neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum (similar to Botox).

Whether Dysport® is right for you depends on the type of wrinkles you’re looking to erase.
Dysport® only works on dynamic wrinkles that form due to endlessly repeated muscle contractions on the upper third of the face. If you’re looking to address forehead lines, the 11s, and crow’s feet, then your West End surgeon can inject Dysport® to relax the muscles and erase the wrinkles.
However, if you’re looking to address lines and wrinkles on the middle to lower face, Dysport® is not the right option. These wrinkles need dermal fillers such as Juvéderm or Restylane instead.
Like BOTOX, Dysport® is the ultimate “lunchtime treatment.”
Our board-certified West End surgeons handle these injections because they demand a thorough knowledge of facial anatomy to target the correct muscles with the neuromodulator. Dysport® is injected with a very tiny needle, and it is not injected to great depth. Patients equate the injections to the feeling of a pinprick, so topical numbing cream is not necessary.
Your entire Dysport® session takes just 15 minutes or so. Then you can get right back to work or your other normal activities.

Because Dysport® is made with smaller molecules than BOTOX it can start working a little faster. Generally, Dysport® fully takes effect in about three days.
Dysport® keeps injected muscles from contracting for about four months.
At that point, the muscle will again begin to contract, and the dynamic wrinkle or wrinkles that form on the surface skin will return. Another Dysport® session will maintain your results.

Prior to your treatment please make sure you have not been taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or any other blood thinning medication or supplement for 5-7 days.
Please do not consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising)
Please come to your appointment with clean skin, free of any make-up or lotions/creams.

BOTOX and Dysport® are very similar, but they have some subtle differences.
Both work the same way on dynamic wrinkles. Some people think Dysport® lasts one month longer than BOTOX, but that hasn’t been clinically proven. The two products are diluted differently, so it takes more Dysport® to achieve the same results as BOTOX, but the price is lower, so it equals out in the end.
Dysport® is made of smaller molecules compared to BOTOX. This allows Dysport® to start working a day or so faster than BOTOX. It also allows Dysport® to be spread to a larger area. But the smaller molecules also make Dysport® more difficult to work with when treating smaller areas.

While all of these are injectables, Dysport® is a neuromodulator. It works by relaxing muscles that create wrinkles on the surface of skin when they contract. This happens when we make certain expressions. When injected, Dysport® stops the contractions, so the wrinkles don’t form. Dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm or Radiesse, have no effect on dynamic wrinkles.
Dermal fillers — the two most popular are Juvéderm and Restylane — work in an entirely different manner. When injected, they simply “fill” in lost volume. This type of wrinkle is known as a “static wrinkle.” These wrinkles and areas of volume loss show themselves at all times and are due to sun damage, loss of collagen production, and personal habits. The most popular fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that is responsible for hydrating and plumping the skin. When a filler like Juvéderm is injected, the hyaluronic acid binds with nearby water molecules, instantly adding volume and pushing the wrinkled skin upward, erasing the wrinkle. Dysport® doesn’t work on static wrinkles.
Like BOTOX, since its FDA approval in 2009 Dysport® has proven to be highly effective and safe.
The main risks or side effects of Dysport® are slight redness and swelling at the injection sites. This usually resolves within the first day. Some patients can develop a headache for a day or so after their injections.
The main risk with Dysport® is having it injected by an inexperienced injector. That’s because if Dysport® is injected into the incorrect muscle it can create problems such as a drooping eyelid. This is why you need to trust these injections to our board-certified plastic surgeons at West End Plastic Surgery. Our team has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and experience with injectables ensuring you’ll love the results of your Dysport® injections.
