FAQs about VASERLipo

It can be incredibly frustrating dealing with stubborn fat pockets that are resistant to even the best diet and exercise program. If you’re close to your ideal body weight but want to improve the contour of your body by getting rid of those fat pockets, you may be a good candidate for liposuction. Liposuction is a procedure done individually or to complement other surgical procedures to contour your body into a more desired shape. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the state-of-the-art liposuction treatment called VASERLipo.

What is liposuction?

Traditional liposuction uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body. VASERLipo is a revolutionary technique that targets fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue. This results in more precise and shapely outcomes, with a much faster recovery time. VASERLipo can reduce the appearance of cellulite as well.

Who are good candidates for this surgical procedure?

If you are within 10 to 15 percent of your target body weight, in good health, exercise regularly and consume a healthy diet, you may be a good candidate for VASERLipo. If you have fat deposits and areas of cellulite that have been resistant to diet and exercise, you may be a good candidate. It’s important to know that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure.

How is the VASERLipo performed?

Liposuction can take anywhere from one to five hours, depending on the extent of treatment. A small incision is made in the treatment area, and a special saline solution will be injected to help numb the area and shrink blood vessels. Dr. Ruff then inserts a thin device that emits ultrasonic waves into the incision area, breaking down the structure of the targeted fat cells into liquid form. What’s revolutionary about this treatment is that the ultrasound energy bounces off nearby vital tissues and leaves them undisturbed.

Once the targeted fat cells have become liquid, a small cannula is inserted into the treatment area and moved around gently to remove the liquid. Stitches close the incision, and gauze bandages, tape and compression garments are placed over the surgical area.

Patients who undergo VASERLipo will benefit from the less aggressive approach than traditional liposuction, as there isn’t immediate swelling of the treatment areas. Outcomes are closer to ideal results as well.

Where can liposuction be performed on the body?

Liposuction cannulas have become smaller as the treatment has advanced, so liposuction can be performed all over the body. The most common areas that patients have treated are the abdomen and waist, buttocks, back rolls, love handles, inner and outer thighs and knees.

VASERLipo can be used on the abdomen, arms, back, hips, outer thighs and even the chin area. If you are interested in scheduling a consultation and you live in Washington, D.C., or surrounding areas, call our office at 202-785-4187.
